With a preface by Thierry Wasser acclaiming the author’s “provocative” teaching method and emotional synaesthesia, Ron Winnegrad, the perfumer and, most recently, head of the IFF Perfumery School, presents an intimate and heart-warming autobiographical account of his personal outlook on the fragrance industry and the craft behind it. Beginning with a brief history of his career and early days as a technical perfumer developing new aroma chemicals, most of the text discusses the ‘FragranceGPS’ process Winnegrad developed for learning raw materials, which is succinct and useful for any perfumery student. It is in the realms outside of perfumery that the book occasionally loses focus as Winnegrad attempts to align his Eastern philosophy with Western perfumery traditions, although occasionally producing interesting results.
